There’s a certain kind of magic in preparing a table for the people you love. In our little corner of Andalucía, in the sun-soaked town of Mijas, we’ve found that magic thrives when you slow down, pay attention to the details, and create something beautiful together.

As part of our rental management and content creation work here in southern Spain, we often style spaces for photoshoots, but this one felt different. This wasn’t just a project, it was a gathering in the making. The table we set wasn’t only for the camera. It was for laughter, connection, and memories that would live on far beyond the evening.

At the heart of this table sat something homemade and full of love: a simple, fragrant lemon drizzle cake. Baked in our kitchen just hours before guests arrived.

Lemon Drizzle Cake Recipe

Cake:

– 175g (1 ½ cups) self-raising flour
– 150g (¾ cup) caster sugar
– ½ tsp baking powder
– 2 large eggs
– 150g (⅔ cup) plain yoghurt (Greek or regular, full-fat or low-fat)
– Zest of 2 lemons
– 2 tbsp lemon juice
– 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Drizzle:

– Juice of 2 lemons
– 75g (⅓ cup) caster sugar

Method:

– Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a loaf tin.
– In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking powder.
– In another bowl, beat the eggs, yoghurt, lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla until smooth.
– Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
– Pour into the loaf tin and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
– While the cake is still warm, mix the drizzle ingredients together and pour over, allowing it to soak in.
– Let it cool slightly before slicing, best enjoyed on a sunlit table, surrounded by good company.
